Did you know that coffee is one of the most studied supplements in the world? Yes, I said supplement! Coffee is full of caffeine and scientists have found a correlation between increased physical performance and consuming caffeine. Granted, drinking coffee does not give you as much caffeine as taking a caffeine supplement, but with coffee, you are getting the benefit of being able to drink that sweet, sweet coffee. (as opposed to taking a pill)
Anyways, drinking coffee before a hike can be a great energy booster and increases the effectiveness of your body during a strenuous hike.
If you are training for a race, long hike, or are just looking to get outside for the day, here are some of the many benefits to drinking a cup of coffee beforehand:
- Increased Endurance: You can go for a longer distance before you start to feel tired
- Improved Mood & Mental State: You will be happier and your brain will be more alert
- Increased Power Output: You can exert more energy without feeling exhausted
- Improved Focus: You will be more alert towards upcoming obstacles such as tree branches and rocks.
Of course, everything in moderation. Be careful not to drink too many cups before you go, or you risk having an unwanted "crash" in the middle of your hike.
Overall, coffee can be a very helpful motivator if you are feeling tired and need a much needed boost before hitting the road.
If you don't already have a favorite go-to coffee, might we recommend these...
